How bonus bets & free bets actually work

"Bet $5, Get $150" does not mean someone hands you $150. This guide explains what the common sportsbook offer mechanics actually pay, so you can compare offers on substance.

Bonus bets (US) โ€” the stake is not returned

A bonus bet is a token you wager. The near-universal catch: the stake is not returned with winnings (often written "SNR" or "stake not returned").

  • Cash bet: $100 at +100 wins โ†’ you get $200 back ($100 stake + $100 profit).
  • $100 bonus bet at +100 wins โ†’ you get $100. The token is spent.

So a bonus bet is worth its face value only if it wins โ€” its realistic value is a fraction of face value, depending on the odds you use it at. That's why "$150 in bonus bets" and "$150" are very different numbers.

The clocks: offer expiry vs. reward validity

Almost every offer has two separate deadlines, and operators publish them separately:

  • Offer expiry โ€” the date by which you must sign up / qualify.
  • Reward validity โ€” how long the bonus bets last once issued, commonly 7 days, sometimes as short as 24โ€“72 hours.

Unused bonus bets vanish at the end of the validity window. Our offer pages record both clocks whenever the operator publishes them.

Common mechanics decoded

  • "Bet X, Get Y" (bonus bets): place a qualifying cash bet of X; receive Y in bonus-bet tokens (often split into several smaller tokens). Some versions pay whether your first bet wins or loses; some require a loss โ€” read which.
  • First-bet insurance / "bet reset": if your first cash bet loses, you get the stake back as bonus bets (not cash), up to a cap. Value depends entirely on the bonus-bet math above.
  • Deposit match: the operator matches your deposit in site credit or bonus funds, almost always with a playthrough requirement before withdrawal โ€” e.g. "1x playthrough" means wagering the matched amount once; higher multipliers are common in casino offers.
  • Profit boost: a token that increases the payout odds of one bet (e.g. +50% profit). Usually capped ("max stake $25", "max extra winnings $100") โ€” the cap is where the real value is decided.
  • Minimum odds: many offers require qualifying or bonus bets at odds of, say, -200 or longer, to stop risk-free conversion. Shorter-odds bets simply don't count.

Free bets (UK) โ€” same idea, different dialect

UK "free bets" are the same mechanic as US bonus bets, almost always stake-not-returned. UK-specific things to watch:

  • Qualifying bet minimum odds are usually quoted fractionally (e.g. "evens or greater", "min odds 1/2").
  • Free-bet splitting โ€” "ยฃ30 in free bets" typically arrives as multiple tokens (3 ร— ยฃ10) with their own validity window.
  • Payment-method exclusions โ€” some UK offers exclude e-wallet deposits (Skrill, Neteller, sometimes PayPal) from qualifying.

Reading an offer in 20 seconds

  1. Is the reward cash-equivalent or stake-not-returned tokens?
  2. What must I risk to qualify, at what minimum odds?
  3. Do I get the reward win-or-lose, or only on a loss?
  4. How long is the reward valid once issued?
  5. Any playthrough before withdrawal?

Every offer page on BonusMutt records these terms verbatim where the operator publishes them โ€” and says nothing where they don't, rather than guessing. Promotions are marketing: no bonus changes the house edge, and no offer is worth gambling more than you can afford to lose. If it stops being fun, see our responsible gambling page.
